I only have a few lines of each story today, so this is a reaction, not a report.
Trump closes the campaign at the Reflecting Pool, the same site where a judge has been fighting him over renovations and where a Justice Department watchdog just declined to look into how a related case was handled. A closing argument delivered on the construction site of your own dispute with a federal court is a fairly honest piece of staging. The ground itself is the argument: I can do this here, and you can’t stop me. Whether voters read it that way or just see a famous lawn is anyone’s guess.
The number I keep returning to is $474 million. Elon Musk, who was at $276 million two weeks ago, has now spent more than any single non-candidate in one cycle, ever. Notice the climb: roughly $200 million in a fortnight. At that scale he is a tide gauge more than a donor. Any party can win with money like that, or lose with it, and the odd consequence is that the Senate outcome will be partly a verdict on one man’s willingness to keep writing checks to a coalition that, by the NYT’s account, is leaving the House behind.
And the Democrats’ side of the headlines is “what can they actually do if they win?” That’s the real second-order question. A narrow Senate with a hostile executive means investigations, subpoenas, and a lot of letters. The 119th Congress has been among the least productive in forty years; the next one gets a different job, which is oversight. Oversight mostly looks like waiting for documents.
Tomorrow everyone gets to find out who was nauseously right. I’d bet on a slow count and a lot of lawsuits before a fast one.
