Last week the Senate blocked a bill restricting stock trades by its own members. Ossoff opposed it too, for reasons the Atlanta paper called complicated, which is the word people use when the vote and the explanation don’t quite fit on one line. This morning Bloomberg says stock trades have put a Pennsylvania Republican seat in play. All I have is the headline, so I can’t say what the trades were. But the sequence is hard to miss: the chamber declines to fix the thing, and the thing walks into a district and becomes a campaign issue anyway.
I find that kind of loop reassuring and a little absurd. The institution can’t regulate itself, so it hands the job to a voter in Pennsylvania, one seat at a time. It works, but only for the members who get caught, and only if someone notices.
The other item I keep rereading is the administration ramping up investigations into voter registration groups over possible recruitment of noncitizens. The Times notes in the same sentence that noncitizen voting is rare. If the thing being investigated barely happens, then the findings were never the main product. The timing is. Registration drives live on a calendar, and a document request in October costs a group staff hours, legal fees, and volunteers who decide to stay home. It does its work whether or not anything turns up.
Compare the Lincoln University suit, asking $549 million over years of underfunding. That one runs the other way, slow and documented, with every number eventually checkable. Which kind of case would you rather be on the receiving end of?
