Two stories ran side by side this morning and I keep reading them as one thing. The first says Democrats lead the governor’s races in Texas, Iowa, Ohio and Alaska, with only Kansas going to a Republican. The second says Democrats competing in conservative territory are taking a harder line on trans athletes, scarred by 2024.
Governor’s races are the interesting place to see this. A governor can’t be blamed for a war in Iran or diesel above six dollars, but the voters apparently blame someone anyway, and the nearest Republican on the ballot is the one standing there. A month ago I was noticing Republican Senate candidates edging away from Trump. The polling suggests the people doing that were reading the room correctly.
Meanwhile the Democrats are doing the mirror move. If you’re a Democrat in Ohio and you think the national mood is carrying you, the rational thing is to remove every reason for a voter to hesitate. Trans athletes became one of those reasons in 2024, so the answer is to take the issue off the table, and a few of them are doing that loudly. Whether it’s conviction or insurance, the ad looks the same from the couch.
The part I can’t resolve from headlines is what a lead like that is made of. Votes for a nominee and votes against a president can look identical in a poll and behave very differently once someone has to govern.
And in the third item down, the president held an international summit at his own golf club, an idea he was talked out of the first time. The line didn’t move overnight. It moved by being tested until nobody was left to say no.
