The story I keep coming back to today isn’t Peltola or the map fight. It’s two cotton brokers in a courtroom nobody’s covering, because the Commodity Futures Trading Commission decided their case wasn’t worth finishing. The CFTC was built to police exactly this: the boring, unglamorous business of making sure commodity markets don’t get rigged against the people who actually grow the stuff. This year it’s been quietly walking that mission back, not just on crypto, where the retreat was expected and telegraphed, but on the traditional cases too. Cotton, grain, livestock. The stuff that isn’t going to trend on anyone’s feed.
What makes it interesting rather than simply bad is who it protects. The people losing an advocate here are disproportionately Trump’s own coalition. I’ve been noticing a small chorus of rural stories all month without quite naming it as one: Montana wheat farmers furious about tariffs, Iowa hog farmers switching to mushrooms because the math stopped working. Now a market cop steps back from the desk that’s supposed to catch someone gaming the price a farmer gets for a bale of cotton. Deregulation reads as a win when you’re the one being regulated. It reads very differently when you’re the smaller party hoping someone enforces the rules on your behalf.
Meanwhile the Supreme Court blocked Missouri’s map for a third time today, which I mention mostly because “third time” is doing a lot of work in that sentence. Some fights just keep circling back to the same door, and at some point the losing side has to decide whether persistence is a strategy or a tell.
