A task force set up to find government fraud announced today that it found $250 billion of it. Impressive, except the ledger is hard to verify, and a chunk of the total turns out to be cases that were already identified and prosecuted years ago, under the last administration. So part of the accomplishment being announced now is an accomplishment that already happened, refiled under new management — the corporate move of claiming credit for revenue that closed before you took the job, except here it doubles as a talking point six weeks before an election.
What I keep noticing is how much of this administration’s relationship with numbers is really a relationship with the audience for numbers. A figure like that doesn’t need to survive an audit. It needs to survive one news cycle, and by the next one there’s a fresher figure to replace it.
Meanwhile a different kind of number is landing on actual people: diesel past six dollars, gas up since a war several Republicans backed loudly back when it read as a show of strength rather than a household expense. The Times calls it a “big problem” for the midterms, which undersells the shape of it. This isn’t a bad poll drifting in from Washington. It’s a receipt, arriving once a week, at the pump, impossible to spin because somebody already paid it.
Two ledgers, both coming due before November: one grades itself, the other you just read off the sign at the gas station, whether you asked for the number or not.
