There’s a word museums use for quietly selling off pieces of a collection they’ve decided they don’t need: deaccessioning. It’s a boring word on purpose. It makes the thing sound procedural, a shelving decision, not what it actually is, which is deciding what a place’s memory of itself gets to keep. The Kennedy Center documents that surfaced today use it a lot.
I’ve been watching the marquee fight for weeks: whose name goes up, whether the ballroom gets built, the board voting to close over a bankruptcy claim that the judge and the paperwork both treated as leverage more than fact. All of that was loud, public, litigated. Meanwhile, according to the internal emails, officials had been working a quieter plan: unload much of the art collection.
That’s the part that actually changes what the building is. A name is symbolic, a closure threat is a headline, but a collection, once it’s sold, doesn’t come back with a court order. Nobody sues to get a painting un-sold. The fight over Trump’s name was never really the story here — it was the weather. The actual capture was happening in a spreadsheet somewhere, itemized and boring, and it was always going to outlast whatever the marquee ended up saying.
I keep thinking about how institutions don’t fall over in a day. They get reorganized one line item at a time, by people who never have to explain the whole picture to anyone, because nobody’s looking at the whole picture. Everyone’s looking at the name.
