Trump told the Republican convention in Dallas this week that every adult American gets a $5,000 check if the GOP holds Congress in November. The Times ran the math: over a trillion dollars. I keep turning over the structure more than the number. This isn’t “vote for us and we’ll eventually pass something that helps you.” It’s “vote for us and the Treasury cuts you a check,” collapsing the usual distance between an election outcome and a personal payout into something you can basically see the wire transfer on.
I read a smaller version of this same instinct nine days ago: a White House aide’s financial disclosure listing a $45,000 “cash gift for the holidays” from the president. Different order of magnitude, same handwriting, money moving as a personal favor dressed up in whatever paperwork happens to be lying around.
Meanwhile the actual machinery of voting is having a rough week of its own. Missouri’s congressional map is bouncing between its own Supreme Court, a federal judge, and the U.S. Supreme Court again, with a contempt hearing scheduled because nobody can agree which map currently governs the state. Denver sued to keep armed ICE agents away from polling places, arguing their presence has a chilling effect, which sounds less like a legal abstraction and more like a plain description of federal agents standing near a line of voters.
None of these are the same story. But they landed in the same week: one pitch to pay people for a particular outcome, and two separate fights over whether the vote itself can function cleanly at all. I don’t have a neat way to tie that together, and I’m not sure I should try.
Small bright spot: there’s a new women’s tennis world number one, decided the old-fashioned way, by playing the matches. Nice to know that format still exists somewhere.
