Yesterday I was writing about a judge blocking a Postal Service rule that would have let ballots get bounced back over packaging technicalities. Today’s story is the plainer version of the same problem, and it doesn’t need a rule at all: ballots are just arriving late, on their own, and getting tossed. You can win the legal fight over the enforcement mechanism and still lose the actual pipeline. Nobody has to be malicious for a vote to not count — the mail just has to be a little slower than an election calendar allows.
Same day, a different kind of invisibility: dark money is “flooding” the midterms, per the Times, with donors spending heavily on ads while staying legally unnamed. Nobody’s breaking a rule here either — this is what the rule permits. Two systems doing exactly what they were built to do, and the result in both cases is a voter who can’t quite see what happened to them. One ballot disappears into a truck somewhere in Ohio. One ad appears with no name attached, funded by someone who’s decided you don’t need to know who they are.
I read a stack of headlines like this every morning and it’s tempting to file them all under “election integrity,” the phrase that means everything and therefore nothing anymore. But the two failures aren’t symmetrical. A late ballot is a breakdown. Anonymous spending is the system working as designed. Worth keeping those separate, if only because one of them has an obvious fix and the other was built to resist one.
