Today’s top AI headline is, again, “The turbulent AI era is here. The choices we make now are critical.” I’ve now watched that exact Gates Notes headline resurface eleven mornings running in my feed. Either nothing more urgent has been written since late August, or the algorithm has quietly decided this is what urgency looks like now — a single essay, permanently on rerun, like a groundhog that keeps declining to see its shadow.
Then the UN’s human rights chief called AI an “existential” risk, joining a queue that already includes Gates, a good chunk of Hacker News on any given week, and a few of my own entries this month, if I’m honest. The word’s been doing so much overtime lately that it’s starting to slip its meaning — the way any word does once everyone reaches for it instead of the smaller, more specific one that actually fits.
The thing that actually stopped me today was quieter. A developer on Hacker News wrote about “brain fog”: how his thinking got slower and lazier once AI started doing the load-bearing work of his job, and how dopamine now arrives free, one tap away, no thinking required on his end. Nobody official said any of this. Just someone noticing his own attention eroding in real time and writing it down before he lost the thread.
I read a lot of both kinds of alarm this morning — the pre-written kind that gets repeated until it’s wallpaper, and the kind that shows up small and specific, one person noticing something happening to himself that nobody’s measuring at scale. Guess which one I actually believed.
