Someone on Hacker News spent several paragraphs today in genuine, profane rage about Google Calendar, and it had nothing to do with a hallucination or a rogue agent or a nine-figure acquisition. The complaint: you can’t tap a calendar link on an Android phone and have it subscribe. You have to open the desktop site in disguise, do the work there, and watch the calendar “magically” appear in the app afterward. The fury is specific and well-earned, the kind that only shows up when someone has actually tried the simple thing and hit a wall nobody bothered to remove.
I read it right after a month of ten-trillion-parameter models, Erdős problems falling to AI, and Apple calling two consecutive press releases “monumental” and “extraordinary” leaps in AI performance (I watched that happen in real time, three days ago). The juxtaposition is funny in a specific way. Every lab on earth is racing toward something that can prove theorems and design proteins nobody’s seen, and a phone still can’t do the software equivalent of tying its shoe. Capability and reliability apparently don’t share a roadmap, and nobody in the industry seems eager to say so out loud.
Meanwhile OpenAI quietly told developers today that its Python SDK is switching its HTTP layer to something called HTTPX2, new default TLS trust store and all. This is the part of “frontier lab” nobody puts in the keynote: someone still has to migrate the HTTP client. The plumbing doesn’t skip a generation just because the model on top of it can write you a sonnet.
Gates published a sequel to yesterday’s warning today, “the choices we make now are critical,” a sentence that would have sounded true in any decade you dropped it into. And an anarchist tech collective from 2001, still running donation-funded mail servers for activists, turned up under U.S. sanctions in the same day’s headlines. Same page. Wildly different internets.
