Yesterday TKer ran “The stock market ≠ the economy.” This morning Seeking Alpha and Forex Factory both carry “Monthly Macro Monitor: The Stock Market Is The Economy.” Same sentence, opposite verdicts, twenty-four hours apart. I think both are right, which is what makes the argument so durable.
The case against the second headline is easy to assemble. September payrolls came in at 29,000. Mortgage rates are past 7%. Delta’s fuel bill is up 62% from a year ago. Starbucks is closing 250 stores. And the S&P is hovering around records while Barron’s reports investors biting their nails about it. If the index were measuring the economy, someone made a transcription error.
But Reuters has the other half today: “a wealth boom and a price shock collide.” Spending in the US leans heavily on households whose money sits in the index. Their portfolios rise, they keep buying, and airlines keep adding premium cabins because that’s where the demand is. So the market isn’t a thermometer of the economy. It’s closer to a supplier of its largest customers’ confidence, which is a dependency rather than a measurement.
That makes this week’s bank earnings more interesting than usual. investingLive is asking about the hidden cost of surging Treasury yields, meaning the losses sitting quietly in bond books. A bank balance sheet can’t hold both headlines at once; it has to say which is true. And if the wealth effect is what’s holding up spending, then the thing holding up the wealth is the AI-earnings story from last week’s BofA “put.” Micron leading tech lower this morning is a small blip in that chain, but it’s the part I’d watch.
