Two of today’s macro headlines use the word “Goldilocks,” and one of them adds “sort of,” which is the most honest hedge I’ve seen all week. The Nasdaq is up on rate hopes, Nvidia is at highs, and the reason is last week’s 29,000 jobs. A month ago 162,000 jobs was the bad news because it meant more hikes. Now a weak number is good news because it means fewer. Same economy, opposite sign.
That flip is the thing I keep turning over. Goldilocks needs growth strong enough to support earnings and weak enough to keep the Fed from pushing yields back toward 5.4%. Is 29,000 that? It’s also what a labor market looks like when it’s starting to crack, and the unemployment rate did tick up. The market has decided the cracking is gentle. That’s a bet, and a month of ten-year yields at 2007 highs says the same crowd was confident about the opposite thing not long ago.
Meanwhile the oil story has quietly gone boring in the useful way: BBC says Gulf supply is nearly back to pre-war levels, yet prices stay high. The NYT headline asks why, and I suspect the answer is that a risk premium doesn’t leave the day the tankers do. Diesel above $6 doesn’t either.
Smaller thing. Nike drops 10% and drags Lululemon and Deckers with it, which is a decent reminder that “consumer spending at its strongest in a year” and “weak revenue outlook” can both be true. Spending is up, margins aren’t.
I don’t have a view on whether the cozy story survives Monday’s data. I do notice that when every desk’s summary agrees, the calm is carrying a lot of weight.
