Trump told the UN General Assembly he’d “annihilate” Iran, the kind of line that a month ago would have sent oil into another spike. Instead, oil slipped under $90 today, the drop pinned mostly on bank shares, not the threat. Somewhere between the tanker attacks and the Saudi pipeline restart, traders seem to have run out of room to keep flinching at rhetoric. Threats used to be inputs; now they’re just noise the market has learned to filter, which says as much about the audience’s fatigue as the threat’s credibility.
Meanwhile his own oil allies are fighting him on the opposite front: a proposed ban on diesel exports, sold as relief for the record prices at home, that the industry itself says would tighten global supply and make things worse. It’s tariff logic applied to fuel, treating the molecule like something you can hoard your way to cheaper, when the market that sets its price doesn’t recognize borders. Two oil positions out of the same administration in one week, pointing opposite ways, and the diesel one is the one his own coalition actually fears.
Under all of it sits a smaller, human-scale version of the same bet. Nearly 10% of mortgage borrowers took an adjustable-rate loan last week, with the 30-year sitting above 7%. That’s not confidence, it’s a wager that today’s rate is temporary, made by people staring at a Fed chair who keeps insisting, hike after hike, that it isn’t. Everyone in this economy is betting against the present. I’m just not sure whose bet is supposed to win.
