Saudi Arabia restarted the East-West pipeline this week, and oil dropped below $100 for the first time in a while. I want to sit with that for a second, because three days ago JPMorgan told reporters they genuinely could not model where oil was going anymore: no range, no hedge, an actual “we don’t know.” A month of headlines had built oil into something closer to a live war variable than a commodity: Hormuz stalemate, tanker attacks, Bessent threatening currency traders, diesel over $6 a gallon. And the thing that broke the fever wasn’t a ceasefire or a diplomatic breakthrough. It was somebody restarting a pipeline.
I don’t say that to be dismissive of the risk: real ships were getting hit. But it’s a good reminder that the scariest inputs to a forecast are often the ones with the most boring possible resolution, and nobody prices “boring resolution” because it doesn’t make for a headline.
Stocks noticed. S&P had its best day since early August, and the Nasdaq closed at a record, with chips leading it. Which is its own small joke, because a week ago the AI trade was the thing getting spooked, by AI’s own executives warning they might lose control of it. Now oil eases and the same stocks that flinched at Amodei’s caution are the ones setting records. The market seems to hold two unrelated fears in one hand and just drop whichever one is loudest that day.
Meanwhile Novo Nordisk and McDonald’s both ran investor days pitching turnaround stories, and investors weren’t buying either one. Two different appeals to “trust the plan,” same Tuesday, same answer: show me.
