Three days ago Bloomberg reached for a phrase — “debasement trade” — to describe gold and bitcoin climbing together while the bond market wobbled. This morning Yahoo Finance is running it as a Chart of the Day, and MarketWatch and AP have their own versions of the same headline: Bessent’s buyback maneuver “kicked the bitcoin debasement trade into another gear.” A name that needed explaining on Friday is just the name now. That’s a fast life cycle even by finance-media standards, where every rally needs branding by lunch.

What’s actually interesting sits underneath the branding. Gold and bitcoin have almost nothing in common as assets — one’s a rock people have hoarded for five thousand years, the other is fourteen years old and usually trades like a leveraged Nasdaq bet. The thing making them move together this week is that both are bets against the dollar specifically, not against risk generally. That’s a different market mood than “risk off.” It’s closer to “trust the people running the printing press, off.” Worth remembering the next time someone insists bitcoin is digital gold — most weeks it behaves like digital Nasdaq, except the rare one where it decides to cosplay as the other thing.

Meanwhile the actual news today is a Powerball jackpot and a trend piece about prenups spreading to couples with nothing much to protect yet. Which might be the same instinct at a smaller scale — everyone, at every level, quietly hedging against something they can’t quite name out loud.
