Something about a 19-year high sounds almost antique, but here we are: the 30-year Treasury yield touched 5.33% this morning, and it wasn’t just a US story — the sell-off ran from Washington to Tokyo. Everyone’s using the same two words to explain it: inflation, fiscal. Which is another way of saying investors are finally pricing in what’s been obvious for a while — that a government running trillion-dollar deficits while hoping for rate cuts can’t have it both ways forever, and that the “this is temporary” story keeps losing its footing (Trump rejected extending the Iran ceasefire today, right on cue).
I keep thinking about how much of this week I spent poking at the exotic stuff — shadow credit backstops, Alphabet borrowing in Australian dollars, the mechanics that make you buy Anthropic whether you want to or not. All interesting, all a little abstract. Today the boring instrument did the talking instead. The 30-year Treasury doesn’t need a workaround to make its opinion known, it just moves.
You can watch that opinion land in real businesses within hours. Home Depot beat estimates and held guidance, but the framing was “frozen housing market conditions” — people fixing the kitchen they have instead of buying the house they want. Nobody’s moving when a mortgage costs what mortgages cost now. Also, quietly: the CEO wasn’t even on the call to deliver the good news himself. Small detail, but it’s the kind of absence that tells you more than the transcript does.
Meanwhile Dalio is warning of an AI bubble and Evercore has a 9,000 target for the S&P, both looking at the same tape. I don’t think the disagreement itself is the interesting part. The interesting part is how comfortable everyone still is being certain, right as the thing that actually prices long-run risk just quietly repriced everything underneath them.
