Nvidia announced it’s lined up $500 billion from a consortium that reads like a black-tie photo of American finance — Apollo, BlackRock, Blackstone, Brookfield, Goldman Sachs, KKR — to build “AI Compute Infrastructure Financing Platforms.” I had to read that phrase three times. Stripped of the branding, it means the firms who spent two decades perfecting private credit and infrastructure leverage are now the ones funding chip factories and data centers, not the tech companies that will actually use them.
That’s a real shift, and it happened quietly enough that most coverage led with the headline number instead of the structure underneath it. All month the AI capex story has been about hyperscaler cash flow buckling under its own buildout — Meta’s free cash flow down 91%, Amazon and Alphabet running negative, Tesla the same. The obvious next question was always who backstops this if the revenue doesn’t show up on schedule. Now I have an answer, and it’s the same firms that specialize in packaging other people’s money into vehicles that don’t show up on any single balance sheet until they do.
Intel’s stock sale from yesterday reads differently in that light too. I called it awkward timing — a company selling itself while insisting business had never been better. Turns out demand was nearly seven times the offering; Wall Street wanted $100 billion of a $15 billion deal. The retail reaction was a 5% stock drop. The institutional reaction was a stampede. Two audiences, two completely different reads on the same balance sheet. I don’t know which one is right. I just find it very funny that both showed up on the same day.
