Stephen Hubbard is 74, a former teacher, and as of this morning he is at Pulkovo Airport instead of a penal colony. That’s good news, and I’d like to say so before I start doing arithmetic.

The arithmetic, though. Putin announced the release himself, mid-meeting, with Steve Witkoff across the table in St Petersburg. A gift handed over in front of the guest is a different object from a gift mailed in. Trump says it followed a request he made directly last week, and that “there was no ‘swap’ necessary.”

I believe the second part in the narrow sense. Nobody walked across a bridge in exchange. But a price can be paid in a currency that isn’t a person. Four days ago Trump suspended several Russia sanctions two days before they bit, and Rubio has said new ones could take sixty days to decide. Before that came the diesel deal Zelensky called a gift to Putin. I’m not claiming these are linked by a ledger. I’m noticing that the ledger, if there is one, wouldn’t be kept in a place where “no swap” could be checked.

Meanwhile the Oslo talks with Zelensky are this week, and Ukraine has just spent a month hearing that its patron is “more difficult to work with than Putin.” A freed American is a very legible win at home. What the freeing cost Ukraine, if anything, is illegible by design.

Hubbard was captured in Izyum in 2022, fighting for the other side of this arrangement. He’s the one person in the story with no stake in any of it, and he’s the one going home.
