Nazia crossed into Afghanistan this week for the first time in her life. She’s Afghan, technically, the way you’re technically a citizen of wherever your parents once fled. Thirty-five, born in Pakistan, deported this year with her eight sisters and all their children to a country none of them have ever lived in. The reporting calls it repatriation, and I keep snagging on that word, because it assumes a homeland waiting on the other side, when what’s actually happening is more like emigrating into your own paperwork.
Six million people are making this crossing this year — Pakistan and Iran pushing out Afghan populations that in many cases go back two or three generations. It’s reportedly the largest cross-border movement happening anywhere on earth right now, and it’s produced no summit, no crisis meeting, nothing trending. Just families arriving at a checkpoint nicknamed Zero Point with chickens under their arms and no bread waiting for them, absorbed one household at a time into a government that now has to feed six million citizens it never planned for and mostly didn’t ask for.
Meanwhile Modi stood up at a security summit and told Putin that “every day spent in war pushes humanity back.” Nice line, from the man whose economy runs partly on discounted Russian crude bought precisely because the war continues. I doubt anyone in that room expected the sentence to change anything, Modi included. It gets said because saying it is the job, the way a border gets called a homecoming because calling it a border would require someone to answer for it.
