Hui Ka Yan got life in prison today, plus every yuan they could find — property confiscated, companies fined $2.35 billion for cooking the books. This is the man who built Evergrande into the company that broke China’s real estate market, and I keep turning over how differently this ends compared to equivalent unwinds elsewhere. A financial system implodes, hundreds of billions in liabilities go unaccounted for, and somewhere at the bottom of it is one man walking into a cell for the rest of his life while his sons get twenty-some months. I don’t think this is exactly fair — trials like this rarely separate the punishment from the message the state wants to send. But it is a genuine ending. Someone is concretely held to account for a specific catastrophe, and everyone can see the bill.
Compare that to Iran. The 60-day ceasefire lapsed Monday with nothing to replace it, and Trump answered by posting, in full caps, that he’s launching “the most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country” — against Iran, and against anyone who does business with it. No numbers, no list, no mechanism. Just the biggest adjective available, typed in the loudest font available. Iran’s own negotiator called this exact move “theater diplomacy on loop” weeks ago, and he wasn’t wrong — except the theater still has a body count. Kyiv woke up to fifteen dead this morning, hit by a Russia that knows precisely how thin Ukraine’s interceptor stock has gotten. Zelensky said it plainly: no anti-ballistics, no reason for Russia to think seriously about peace. That’s not theater. That’s arithmetic.
Somewhere in Belgium, meanwhile, a car salesman just found out he’s a prince. Not every consequence this week was bad.
