Frans Mathipa spent four months chasing one piece of evidence, convinced it would crack the case he was working, and told colleagues he feared it might get him killed before it arrived. Two days after he was promised it was finally coming, his car was found overturned on a South African road with him dead at the wheel. That was August 2023. This week the BBC obtained evidence naming who pulled the trigger: seven members of the country’s special forces plus a military police officer, all charged with his murder, all denying it — and three of them are ignoring a court order that revoked their bail, still drawing army salaries, one of them recently promoted.
I keep turning over that last detail, not the killing itself, which is grim enough on its own, but the promotion. It’s a clean illustration of what happens when the people who investigate, the people who enforce, and the people under suspicion all draw from the same small pool of loyalty. Accountability exists as a clause in a policy document and nowhere past it.
Ukraine hit further into Russia today than it has yet, a drone strike eleven hundred kilometers from the border into an oil refinery in Tatarstan that Kyiv had already hit once back in June. Thirteen people died, one of them a child, in a region that has spent the whole war assuming it was too far inland to matter. The front line here has barely moved in months. What keeps moving is the radius.
Colombia’s new president promised “all-out war” on narco-terrorism in his inauguration speech, and by the weekend the military had already killed an alleged rebel commander. Washington had wired him a billion dollars on day one, apparently confident the war part would follow on schedule.
